Because we’ve been there. We created our childhood cancer jewelry collection – gold flower jewelry – after our personal experience with the disease. Our company is dedicated to supporting cancer research as well as families undergoing treatment for pediatric cancer.
In the United States alone, one in 285 children is diagnosed with cancer, approximately 16,000 per year. Deeply troubling is that cancer rates in children have risen by 24% over the past 40 years. Yet, the pharmaceutical industry does not fund or invest in childhood cancer research because the population of adults with cancer is far greater and therefore more profitable. Simply put – they are not interested in curing our children since there is little money to be made.
In the US, Federal funding for research for all childhood cancers combined totals $195 million which amounts to roughly 4% of the $5.2 billion dollar budget for cancer research. That’s a fraction of the investment in research for adult cancer types. Furthermore, there has been little progress when it comes to treatment for childhood cancer. In fact, the treatments and protocols for pediatric cancer have remained the same since the 1970’s.
For medulloblastoma in particular, an aggressive form of brain cancer more commonly found in children, the treatment has not changed since the 1980’s. Moreover, it’s a shame that since the 1980’s, hundreds of new drugs have been developed for adults, while for children there are only twelve that are use-approved and three developed specifically for children.
If the pharmaceutical industry won’t invest in saving our children, then it is us that must advocate for viable cures.
We have created Brooke’s Blossom’s Gold Flower Jewelry – a gold flower childhood cancer jewelry collection in memory of Brooke Hester, a special young girl who lost her battle to neuroblastoma. While undergoing treatments, Brooke wore a hairband to keep up appearances. She wanted all children battling cancer to be able enjoy wearing a beautiful accessory. Modeled after the hairband that she wore, we created gold flower jewelry with her love of pink, flowers, and the checkered design on her band in mind. You can read more about the inspiration behind the gold flower ring and jewelry collection on our blog page.
We will donate a portion of the sales from each piece in her jewelry collection to: The Brooke’s Blossoms Foundation, the Ellie Ruby Foundation, and to Aid L’ shalom. Each foundation is dedicated to supporting families undergoing treatment in a unique way.
Brooke’s Blossom’s mission is to encourage and empower others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference. We can help children with cancer by raising global public awareness of childhood cancer through service projects, education and advocacy initiatives.
The foundation raises money for research into earlier detection, newer treatments, and targeted therapies for pediatric cancer. The goals is for treatment to be gentler and more tolerable throughout all stages of the disease – discovery, diagnosis, treatment, and remission. No one should have to suffer to heal, especially children. The Brooke’s Blossoms Foundation also sends beautiful head bands and bandanas to children battling cancer, just as Brooke loved to do.
The Ellie Ruby Foundation’s mission is to “bring smiles and support to families battling pediatric cancer.” The primary goal is to increase consciousness of the prevalence of pediatric cancer and the severity of the impact of a diagnosis on the entire family. They pair families with counselors to help them navigate through the difficult time. The Ellie Ruby Foundation is also dedicated to funding research for the deadliest form of pediatric cancer – brain cancer.
Partnering with leaders in the medical field, together they focus on improving outcomes with innovative, translational research. Moreover, the foundation is dedicated to recognizing medical teams, particularly nurses, that elevate the patient experience by providing exceptional care.
In order to allow parents to be fully present with their children throughout their cancer treatments, the Ellie Ruby Foundations provides financial assistance to families undergoing treatment so that they can focus on what’s most important – looking after their sick child.
Aid L’Shalom’s mission is to enable families to access and afford world-class supplemental treatments. By removing barriers of knowledge, cost, and convenience, they support patients with integrative medicine – a life-giving combination of Western medical practice and treatment modalities not covered by insurance.
